We learned today that Oscar winning film music composer John Barry has died at the age of 77. As a small tribute to the man who made so much wonderful music over the years, including such memorable film soundtrack music for the James Bond films, Born Free, The Lion In Winter, The Wrong Box, Zulu, Dances With Wolves, etc., we present here his first two singles for Capitol of Canada:
Capitol 72036 The John Barry Seven "Cutty Sark / Lost Patrol" (1962)
Capitol 72064 The John Barry Seven "The James Bond Theme / The Blacksmith Blues" (1963)
.. and thanks "JB" for such wonderful records ... many of you Beatles fans will remember the opening "James Bond" guitar riff to the song "Help!" from the Capitol LP Help! from 1965....
Today we also added a very intersting article written by Piers. This article covers the red target 45s with a dome logo instead of the corrected round target logo. These 45s are quite difficult to find! Read the article through the miscellaneous menu, or by clicking HERE.
Another huge section has been added today to the site: a detailed account of every label variation on which The Beatles issued their records, from 1962 up until the 80s where Canada pressed their last Beatles records. You can access the page through the Beatles section of the menu, or simply by clicking HERE.
If you found the Yardbirds in Canada article interesting, you will want to revisit the page and take a second look at the article since a lot of new material has been added!; mostly concerning the conert dates in Canada. You can visit the page HERE, or as usual through the main menu, under the miscellaneous/articles tab.

Ever since I published the Beatles Canadian Reference Guides a few years back, people around the world have always been asking me ... what is the rarest Canadian Beatles single ? The Decca / Compo "My Bonnie" 45 (Decca 31382, April 23rd., 1962) has only surfaced less than a half-dozen times. The rarity of that single is well documented elsewhere, but following close behind My Bonnie in "Canadian Beatles rarity" has to be the very first edition of "Please Please Me / Ask Me Why" which was issued in Canada on April 1st., 1963. This was issued here in Canada a few weeks before the single was issued in the USA by Vee Jay (VJ 498). Paul White claims that only about 180 copies of these Capitol 45s were pressed by RCA Victor in the spring of 1963.
The very first pressings of Capitol 72090 went out to radio stations with the publishing credit "Dick James Ltd.". The records were issued in the glossy black Capitol sleeves and carry the large matrix number etchings in the run-out areas that were in the same handwriting style as Capitol 72076 "Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You" from February 1963. It has been documented before that the masters for both sides of this single were created by RCA Victor engineer Fred Burchill at RCA's mastering studios at 225 Mutual Street in Toronto. Later copies with the same matrix etchings are from early 1964 (when the record was re-pressed for Beatlemania demand) and carry the "Concertone" publishing credit on both sides. I have attached a scan of the B-side with the original Dick James Ltd. publisher credit.
This information is also available in the ARTICLE section.
Believe it or not… a second ORIGINAL 1966 Maple Leaf Gardens poster for the Beatles August 17th., 1966 shows has surfaced recently... and this one is apparently in better condition than the first one that surfaced in 2005. A picture of that 1966 poster appears here on the home page and in the poster section of the website. We'll be watching to see what the second poster will sell for. The 2005 poster eventually sold to a US Beatles poster collector for $25 000 US !

For this new year of 2011, we are bringing a new feature to the website: a featured record of the month! for this first article, we present you this recent find. This copy of Lady Madonna / The Inner Light Capitol 2138 is quite interesting ... there is a TV station library sticker from CFCM-TV and CKMI-TV in Quebec City from early 1968 (CFCM broadcast in French and CKMI broadcast in English).
This is a neat 45 because it is an RCA pressing as opposed to the more common Compo press. It also has no brackets on the label. Like most library copies from the 1960s it appears to have been played only once if not at all. The disc would have been sent to the station library soon after the March 11th., 1968 release date. The A-side is marked with an asterisk in byro pen but has no library sticker.
If you have a cool original Beatles-related record from the 1960s you would like to share please send it along via email to
piers@capitol6000.com and we will do our best to feature it on this page.
Happy 2011 to all! Keep on visiting the website for upcoming material!
